How can Reflexology help with your Mental Health?

Reflexology has been around for thousands of years and is a complementary therapy that involves pressure to various points on the feet or hands. These reflex points are believed to be linked to every organ, gland or system of the body. There are detailed maps which refer to specific reflexology points on the feet.

Feet and hands mirror our lives and it is through Reflexology, an ancient Chinese technique of working reflex points, that the journey unfolds.

How can Reflexology help with Depression?

The art of Reflexology lies within the skill and sensitivity of the Practitioner. Being able to feel the quality of each and every reflex point is a great skill that takes experience, sensitivity and care.

Many studies revealed that foot reflexology could reduce pain and psychological distress like depression and anxiety. This body work relieves symptoms of depression as it stimulates particular pressure points/nerve endings in the feet and/or hands. In turn, this:

  • Eliminates buildup of toxins in the body
  • Encourages the flow of blood to body organs
  • Activates the endocrine system
  • De-congests energy pathways for optimum nervous system function
  • Induces relaxation states
  • Encourages the release of endorphins; the natural feel-good hormones in the body that can minimise the body’s stress response.

Further benefits of Reflexology

Reflexology is not a diagnosis or cure but its benefits are cumulative. If the body has time to relax regularly then it has more opportunities to heal itself and Reflexology has shown to be effective and assist self-healing in conditions such as, but not limited to:

  • Anxiety and stress disorder
  • Joint pain and joint mobility
  • Breathing disorders (e.g. Asthma)
  • Sleep deprivation and insomnia
  • Problems with digestion (e.g. IBS)
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Thyroid problems
  • Plantar Fasciitis

Massage Your Mind

Massage therapy is becoming more and more recognised as an effective way to assist in the management of a variety of mental health problems. At Creative Chiropractic we see many patients who have faced mental health difficulties at some point in their lives. Some examples include: post-traumatic stress, anxiety of many types, headaches, eating disorders and issues surrounding bullying and domestic violence.

In recent years, the public have become more aware of mental health and the importance of a healthy lifestyle in order to maintain overall wellbeing. Looking for help, people are turning to traditional medical treatment, as well as therapies such a Massage and Reflexology, to achieve a positive balance between mind and body.

Not everyone realises that stress is a trauma for the body as well as the mind.  Physical pain such as muscle cramps, headaches, joint pain and several types of inflammation can be made worse or even caused by stress, anxiety and fatigue.

The Happy Hormone

There are several hormones in the body controlling our mood such as dopamine, known as “the happy hormone”, serotonin “the calming hormone”, endorphins “the body’s natural pain relievers”, cortisol “the stress hormone” and adrenaline the “fight or flight hormone”.

If we take the examples of dopamine and cortisol: dopamine influences mood and the ability to focus. By performing specific massage techniques in order to promote blood flow towards the heart, overall dopamine levels are increase due to an improvement in circulation and lymphatic flow.

Cortisol is elevated during times of stress, which leads to symptoms including sleep deprivation, anxiety and aggression.  Having a massage helps to reduce the level of this hormone, leading to relaxation, improved sleep and the ability to think more clearly.

Massage Therapy can help to promote relaxation and stress relief by stimulating the nervous system and balancing suppressed hormones: serotonin, dopamine and endorphins.

Massage therapy is an important aspect of the patient care we provide at Creative Chiropractic. Our Massage Therapists are highly qualified in a range of techniques, enabling patients to be treated for a wide variety of conditions. From a Deep Tissue to Ultimate Relaxation, pick the perfect Massage to suit you…

A technique using a combination of gentle pressure with a soft pumping movement in the direction of the lymph nodes. This process allows the blood and lymph circulation to remove the waste and distribute nutrients and oxygen back around the body.

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE
A stretching and rolling technique that treats muscle tightness and pain by relaxing contracted muscles, improving blood and lymphatic circulation and stimulating the elasticity in muscles.

Calming

RELAXATION MASSAGE
The classic stress relieving treatment that leaves you with the ultimate feeling of relaxation and wellbeing.

When Chronic Pain Gets You Down…

Chronic pain is not just a physical condition—it is an emotional one that has tremendous influence over thoughts and moods. People with chronic pain may isolate themselves from others or be unable to achieve mobility that they once had. Chronic pain is not just associated with physical injuries, it can stem from conditions like heart disease, arthritis, migraines and diabetes.

Our Practice Director Michael I’Anson, gives us an  insight behind pain and how it can affect our mental health.

“It is important to know that it is normal to feel this way when you are in pain, especially for long periods of time. However, it is something you do not have to live with.

As Chiropractors, we find that pain and depression are closely related. Sometimes pain and depression create a vicious cycle in which pain worsens symptoms of depression, and then the resulting depression worsens feelings of pain.

When taking a medical history, patients commonly describe their pain and the associated problems as “wearing them down” and, over time, affecting their mood. This type of pain is described as ‘chronic’ and causes a number of problems, often leading into depression, including trouble sleeping and stress. Furthermore, disabling pain can enhance low self-esteem and impact greatly on work, social, family and financial aspects of our life.

Mental illness does not just occur with pain resulting from an injury. It is also common in people who have pain that is linked to a health condition such as diabetes or heart disease”.  Living with chronic pain may also lead to:

Depression

Living with pain can affect mood, often making us more susceptible to emotional changes that can foster depression, anxiety and fear. Such mood disorders can also promote a dependence on prescription medications which are designed to treat the pain.

Sleep Deprivation

In addition to changes in our mood, living with pain can seriously disturb sleep patterns. It is often difficult for a person to fall asleep, let alone remain asleep for any period of time when we are experiencing unrelenting or sporadic pain.

Relationship Problems

It’s no secret that the side effects of living with pain reach over into a person’s personal relationships with coworkers, family and friends. The physical limitation that develop, as well as one’s tendency to be less patient while in pain, can limit one’s ability to interact and empathise with others.

Free Pain Assessment

Creative Chiropractic offers the opportunity to discuss your pain and associated problems with a highly qualified health professional. The discussion includes an indication as to what could be causing the pain and ways to help identify and treat the root cause of your condition.

Our Free 30-minute Pain Assessment is conducted in a friendly, professional, relaxed and confidential environment.

There is no further commitment or obligation, just a genuine chance to talk through how your symptoms could be treated and managed and provides the first step to a pain-free life.

Spring has definitely sprung and as we enjoy the longer days and the outdoors becomes more of an attractive option, our bodies and minds seek to be more active. Time for rejuvenation!

Creative Chiropractic, Summer Health Plan, watermelom, summer, healthyIsn’t Rejuvenation a fantastic word? Defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as “the action or process of making someone or something look or feel better, younger or more vital.” As we slough off winter, many of us will be wanting to achieve at least one of these goals. It’s all about that balance of leading full and complex lives, often not making time for ourselves or simply not knowing where to start…

If you need a helping hand to brush off those cobwebs, to take a breath and make time for yourself and to feel energised, then we are on hand and offering the option of 3 special Summer Health Plans to boost your body and well-being…

SUMMER HEALTH PLANS, INTRO 30 min Health Guide £35, PLUS 30 min Health Guide, 60 min Active Lifestyle Session £65 (SAVE £20), COMPLETE 30 min Health Guide , 4 x 60 min Active Lifestyle Sessions 30 min Progress Review £195 (SAVE £75)A choice of 3 plans (right) allows you to choose what best suits you and if you opt for the bespoke 1-2-1 Active Lifestlye Sessions from one of our fully qualified Practitioners, you will be amongst the peaceful surroundings of Pensthorpe Natural Park too! Creative Chiropractic, Summer Health Plan, Health Guide, Rachael Curnow, Sophie Allsopp, Sophie & Boo

Rachael Curnow (right), Rehabilitation Specialist at Creative Chiropractic, putting Sophie Allsopp through her paces!

Sophie Allsopp (left), a busy Mum who is also the Founder and Director of her own business, Sophie & Boo, has taken part in our new Health Plan: “After the initial 30-minute Health Guide, I understood so much more about my body and what I needed to focus on and how I could make the changes. The support and guidance has been so brilliant as it was, and still is, all about what is right for me and how I can make it work, given my daily and weekly schedule.”

Once the initial 30 minute Health Guide has been completed, you have the opportunity to begin Active Lifestyle Sessions at the Practice, tailored to suit you and enable you to move one step forward at a time (or even two!), with the team on hand for encouragement and support.

“Taking part in a Health Plan Programme at Creative Chiropractic has enabled me to make those first (and, to be honest, somewhat nervous) important steps.” Like Sophie, many patients at the Practice initially arrive with their own concerns, restrictions and lack of confidence, but with the team’s support, guidance and encouragement, they have gone on to feel and experience very noticeable benefits including weight loss, a dramatic increase in energy levels, sleep improvement, a belief that they can make a change and an overall sense of wellbeing. As another patient explained “I used to turn up so miserable, but now my Va Va Voom is back and I genuinely feel so happy”.

After some initial nerves, Sophie has noticed improvements already. “I now look forward to my sessions at the Practice and I’m much less nervous about the activities and bespoke exercises. Having time to focus on myself has been pretty revolutionary actually and I feel different both mentally and physically. I have definitely felt a big change and can do so much more. I now have confidence in my body’s capabilities and I am able to believe the goals I have are attainable.” So give yourself that ‘me’ time you deserve and focus on the I in healthier!

As C.S. Lewis said, “Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes, but when you look back everything is different.” Many people who believed they couldn’t, have, and now it’s your turn! So, get your paddle, brace yourself, breathe, smile and get paddling your own canoe!

Life in the fast lane with Chris Cockrell!

A former soldier and specialist in personal security, Creative Chiropractic Patient Chris Cockrell is an award-winning professional chauffeur at his company, Near and Far (www.nearandfarfakenham.co.uk) based in Fakenham. Mr Bownes caught up with high-flying Chris to talk about his career and how driving in excess of 80,000 miles a year doesn’t just take its toll on your vehicle…

Chris Cockrell, Near and Far, Chauffeur service, Fakenham, NorfolkAfter spending 20 years working in the Chauffeuring & close protection industry and looking after everybody from Royalty to the everyday person, Chris decided to set up Near and Far in 2013, a bespoke Chauffeur service.

With jobs varying between taking care of VIP’s and Celebrities and bringing Patients to the Practice at Pensthorpe, Chris caters for every customer and any occasion from dinner engagements, weddings to airport trips, with a keen focus on providing exceptional customer service.

Chris Cockrell, Near and Far, Chauffeur, Fakenham, NorfolkHis hard work has paid off after achieving two National Chauffeur Awards (Company of the Year and Best Small Chauffeur Business) for two years in a row!

Chris was also shortlisted for 3 years in a row for National Professional Driver of the Year as well as winning the Exceptional Customer Service Award at the EDP Norfolk & Suffolk Wedding Awards.

Chris was also featured on BBC Look East’s short documentary: ‘Life and times of a Chauffeur’ which you can watch by clicking here.

So how challenging is it to balance a healthy lifestyle with spending so much time on the road?

Chris drives over 80,000 miles per year and he admits it takes its toll. “Even though I drive the most up-to-date and modern vehicles, lack of exercise is the main hazard and by-product of my job. Without my visits to Creative Chiropractic, I would be in a real state and not be able function effectively.” Chris sees Practitioners, Michael (Chiropractor), Serena (Senior Massage Therapist) and Rachael (Rehabilitation Specialist) and they “keep me going!”

Driving Pains? Read on for our Practitioners' top tips to keep you mobile

Top tips to keep YOU mobile while driving…

If, like Chris, you spend hours a day driving, whether commuting to and from work, or ferrying the children around, then take a look at our Practitioners’ advice for maintaining your posture and minimising many common drivers’ ailments:

Michael I'Anson, Creative Chiropractic, chiropractor, fakenham, norfolk, chiropracticBecause driving can create significant stress to the neck and back, Chiropractor, Michael’s top tip is to tilt the rear view mirror. “Ensure you are in a good driving position and not too close or far away from the steering wheel.

The back of the seat should be tilted no more than 10º away from you with your elbows in a comfortable position to the side of the body. Now, tilt the rear view mirror up a notch so that if you inadvertently drop into a slouch, the mirror will reinforce the need to ‘sit-up straight.”

Away from the car? Click for a simple neck stretch you can do at home.

Serena Clarke, Senior Massage Therapist, Creative Chiropractic, Norfolk, FakenhamAnother common cause of back pain from driving is highlighted by our Senior Massage Therapist, Serena: “A phone or wallet in your back pocket continuously while driving can cause the pelvis to twist and misalign your spine over time. This can make back pain much worse, so my top tip is to take anything bulky out of your back pockets while you’re driving!”

Away from the car? Here’s Serena herself demonstrating a fantastic stretch for your glutes.

Rachael Kernow, Rehabilitation Specialist, Creative Chiropractic, Fakenham, NorfolkHow you hold the steering wheel is also important according to Rehabilitation Specialist, Rachael: “It’s all about the Right Angle! Instead of holding the steering wheel at the very top or right/ left side with one hand always have two hands on the wheel for safety and also to balance tension stress distribution through the musculoskeletal system. Keep elbows at right angles whenever possible and wrists straight.”

Away from the car? Click for a great shoulder stretch you can do.

(Safety is always the first priority, so please be aware to never make an adjustment that would hinder your view of the road or your mirrors.)

Pain driving you round the bend?

Mr Bownes, Creative Chiropractic, pain assessment, free appointment, chiropractor, Fakenham, Norfolk, Pensthorpe, back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, headachesIf you have any niggling pains that might be caused by driving or any other aspect of your lifestyle, don’t forget you can take advantage of Creative Chiropractic’s Free 30 minute Pain Assessment appointment where a Practitioner can talk through your symptoms with you and any suggested treatment to get you back on track. Unleash the Therapeutic Power!

We all know that massage is great for you, but did you know that its benefits can actually be heightened just by using essential oils?

One of Creative Chiropractic’s Massage Therapists, Jess, gives us an insight into the unrivalled therapeutic power of a massage on tight muscles together with pre-blended essential oils…

It’s not such a well known fact that the nose contains 10 million neurons called olfactory receptors and they all reach out and catch odour molecules. The olfactory nerve is connected to our emotional centre in the brain called the limbic system. This part of the brain is also involved in controlling heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, reproductive behaviour, memory and our reaction to stress. Certain oils can stimulate specific neuro-chemicals within the nervous system, calming jangled nerves and stimulating the energy flow. The combination of the healing touch of massage together with essential oils work on the body and the mind at the same time.

Essential oils, plants, plant extracts, botanicalsFrom Ancient Egypt to Modern Times…

The earliest evidence we have of using aromatic extracts for beauty, culinary uses, spiritual and physical wellbeing is from 3000-2500 BC in Egypt, where essential oils featured in all aspects of daily life. The Greek physician, Hippocrates, was considered the ‘father of modern medicine’ and he studied and documented the medicinal influence of over 300 plants, reportedly advising, “The way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented massage every day.” However, the birth of modern aromatherapy occurred in the 1920s when French Chemist René Gattefossé soaked his hand in lavender essential oil after burning himself, as it was the first thing he found. He was surprised that the wound healed so quickly. Before then, in the late 1800’s, researchers had begun using botanical extracts in studies and published their reports in respected medical journals.

Powerful Combination of Massage and Essential Oils…

At Creative Chiropractic, we use pre-blended massage oils by Naturally Thinking (www.naturallythinking.com), a British company specialising in all natural and pre-blended massage oils, each blended for a specific therapeutic and sensual purpose. They smell amazing and when used during a massage, will help to moisturise the skin and make it suppler. More importantly, the oils are drawn into the body through the skin, circulating around the bloodstream and traveling to different organs or body systems. For example, some stimulate circulation, increasing the rate of the elimination of toxins and others act on specific organs, increasing the secretion of body chemicals. Many are highly antiseptic and can also stimulate the production of endorphins which have a pain-relieving and anti-depressant effect. In the Practice, we can map a specific oil used in your massage to what you need…

So how do you feel?

Could you be 10 years younger?

A recent BBC programme How To Stay Young explored the latest research that could help put the brakes on the ageing process with guests invited to discover if their lifestyle had an impact on their ‘body age’ compared to birth age. Evidence suggested that making small changes can indeed slow down ageing and decrease fatigue, illness, disease and injury, but how? Read on to find out…

Ten years younger, Body Composition Monitor, creative chiropractic, health guide, weight loss, healthy, new year, fakenham, north norfolk, norfolkThis time of year, don’t be surprised to see inevitable ‘New Year New You’ adverts for gym memberships, weight loss clubs and diet plans. The opposite and impersonal messages are confusing at best, so it’s no wonder if your well-intentioned healthy New Year’s resolutions lose their way. At the Practice, our approach is all about enabling you to take back control with real-time, individualised information & easy to apply practical advice as well as help to easily monitor your progress. With this in mind, we are introducing a new Personal 30 minute Health Guide as part of our improved offering of services to you.

Mark Wright lost 13lbs in just six weeks with the new Personal Health Guide service at Creative Chiropractic…

And it works!

Meet Mark Wright, After Sales Manager at local Nissan dealer Crayford and Abbs. He visited the Practice six weeks ago with a back issue and was feeling lethargic and mentally “not myself”. He was advised to use our new Body Composition Monitor (BCM) to measure not just weight, but 12 other components, including Metabollic Age, Visceral Fat, Bone Mass and Muscle Mass and Blood Pressure. Using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) technology, a Patient receives an immediate and accurate overview of these indicators plus water and fat percentage in their body, giving personalised insights on current health status. Together with a food diary, our Practitioner identified possible improvements which Mark rigidly stuck to and fast forward to today and the results are better than expected with a weight loss of 13lbs! He says, “When I first came in, I felt mentally low and always tired. With encouragement from the Practice, I now feel healthier, more energetic and I’m bouncing up the stairs with more get up and go than before!” And Mark’s not the only one to notice: “My colleagues have commented on not only the weight loss and the fact that I can fit into my work coat again for the first time in 18 months but also the increase in my motivation and energy..’!”

Other Creative Chiropractic Patients have noticed health improvements from taking the test, so what’s the secret to their success? Mark says, “having all the information fully explained to me by the Practitioner was really good and a key turning point as it trained my brain to think about my lifestyle differently and gave me the confidence to embrace the advice. I now understand the reasons for my cravings and how to handle them in my daily life.

* Latest update! * As of January 27th, Patient Mark Wright has taken off eight years from his metabolic age! Well done, Mark!
